Ecommerce Software Development: How to Upgrade a Plane While It’s Flying

E-commerce sites live and die by their software. So what happens when you need to update it?

It’s a lot like upgrading a plane while it is still flying.

This is what Overstock.com does every two weeks according to Michael Finger, Overstock’s Director of Software Development in Marketing.

Finger is always evaluating new technologies or various projects to see which will enter the production pipeline.

”We get paid to deliver business value. We don’t get paid to come up with cool tech stuff that isn’t going to make us money,” says Finger.

The key is to have the flexibility to give team leaders options that achieve largely the same ends.

This post is based on a SaaS Academy Podcast with Michael Finger, Overstock’s Director of Software Development in Marketing.  To hear this episode, and many more like it, you can subscribe here.
